Divine Discus

Program note

"Divine Discus" for E-flat clarinet and piano draws inspiration from the precise Muay Thai dance move "Narai Throws the Discus." Continuous motion and rhythmic shifts reflect the dance, while staccato and legato passages, rapid fingering, and dynamic contrasts portray the discus' sharp motion and the dancer's agility. Clarinet and piano alternate between leading and supporting roles in a balanced musical dialogue. Rhythmic patterns reminiscent of Thai drumming add cultural depth to a musical experience that echoes the grace and strength of the traditional dance.
